In case you’ve missed it, this small, 22-acre family farm and winery is located right in the heart of Long Island wine country on Route 25 in Southold. Commited to “making old-world style wines that pair well with a wide variety of food and afford great value,” Mattebella crafts their wines entirely by hand. From fruit thinning and leaf pulling to weed removal, pruning, and harvesting, everything is done the old-fashioned way. They’re also commited to practicing sustainable viticulture which includes using biodiesel to power tractors, the complete elimination of herbicides, and the use of organic fertilizers, among others.
Mattebella is definitely different than a lot of the other wineries and boasts more of a homey, down-to-earth vibe than many (how many wineries do you know that have a “tasting cottage?”). It’s a great spot to sit outside with a few friends or just someone special and waste away the hours while tasting some of Long Island’s best!
The tasting cottage is open Wednesday - Monday (closed Tuesdays) from 11 a.m. until at least 6 p.m.
