Now celebrating their 10th year, Toast Coffeehouse in downtown Port Jefferson is a local (and even not-so-local) favorite. Toast began as a breakfast venue when owner Terry Scarlatos took over the bagel store that had been there previously. Over those 10 years, Terry has transformed Toast into a must-visit for Long Islanders and travelers alike.
Toast serves up breakfast and lunch every day until 3 p.m. A recent expansion into the adjacent storefront has helped with the wait but it can still get long on the weekends and they only take reservations for dinner. Your best bet is to call ahead to get an approximate wait time or just show up early and plan on spending a little time in the beautiful surrounding village.
From 6 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights Toast becomes a wine bar with a full dinner menu and a nice selection of craft beers. Last month they started introduced their “Road Trip” menu where local food from a different US city is featured for the month, which offers some great additional menu items that you might not typically find around here.
Toast also operates as a rotating art gallery and features a different artist each month. They hold an opening reception each month, after which the artist's work is put on display and offered for sale for the rest of the month.
As for the food, the recently added Avocado BLT Omelet with bacon, spinach, tomato, and white cheddar has been a big hit, but the long-time fan favorite and perhaps what Toast is best known for is the Graham Cracker Crusted French Toast with peanut butter, banana, and caramel sauce; a must-try for first-timers!
