Vacationing on the North Fork

Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a rustic weekend, or fun-filled family vacation, the North Fork of Long Island is just the ticket. Surrounded by water, it has plenty of beach access, acres upon acres of vineyards, farms, and orchards, and of course, there is Splish Splash, shopping at the Tanger Outlet Center, the Riverhead Raceway and the Long Island Aquarium. And while there is plenty to do while vacationing on the North Fork, there are also ample lodging options for any vacationer's need.

A Rustic Getaway

For those looking to rough-it on the North Fork, there are several choices: One of which is McCann's Campground on Moore's Lane in Greenport. Just minutes from the quaint Village of Greenport, McCann's Campground requires a two-night minimum and three nights on holiday weekends. Tent camping is $20 a night.

Another popular spot to pitch a tent is Indian Island in Riverhead. The county-owned park features lake-beachfront, playgrounds, and clean bathrooms. It is within 15 minutes of downtown Riverhead, Splish Splash, and the area's vineyards.

A Luxury Holiday

In the heart of the Village of Greenport sits the Harborfront Inn, which boasts oversized rooms with breathtaking views of the Peconic Bay. The 35-room hotel offers guests high-speed Internet access, flat-screen televisions, goose down comforters, North Fork wines, bathrobes, and massaging body showers to die for. The hotel - which also has a pool - is close to all that the area has to offer, including bicycle rentals and tours, horseback riding, wineries, Greenport's antique carousel, golf, and shopping. It is also a perfect place to stay if you're planning a day trip to Conneticut's casinos.

In downtown Riverhead, the new 100-room Hyatt Place sits just steps from the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center. The hotel is also just minutes from the Tanger Outlet Center, Splish Splash, the Long Island Science Center, the Long Island Railroad Museum, beaches, canoeing, golfing, and the Riverhead Raceway. It features both an indoor and outdoor pool, fitness center, wine café, free WiFi, a Kitchen Skillet™ breakfast, and a 120-slip marina.

A Romantic Retreat

Nothing says romantic getaway like a stay at one of the North Fork's Bed and Breakfasts, of which there are more than 30 to choose from, each offering unique accommodations — all in close proximity to all of the North Fork's attractions.

In Greenport, sits the 3-bedroom Harbor Knoll, which overlooks Greenport Harbor and features a private beach and dock.

In East Marion, is the popular, five-bedroom Quintessentials Bed & Breakfast and Spa, which has an on-premises full-service spa. The Inn's owners also provide gourmet meals. Meanwhile, Southold's 200-year-old, 5-bedroom Shorecrest Bed & Breakfast features two private beaches, one on the Long Island Sound, the other on the inlet. It offers guests more than just a place to rest their heads; it provides a glimpse into history with its collection of antique furniture, fine art, and vintage china.

Tucked away on a private vineyard is the one-room Sannino Vineyard Tuscan Suite Bed & Breakfast. The Inn is unique in that it offers a custom suite with a private entrance and balcony, king-size bed, dining area, and living room. Guests are also provided with a double bicycle to tour the areas vineyards.

In Jamesport, just a short walk to the beach is the historical Jedediah Hawkins Inn, which was built in 1883, and interestingly has trap doors and secret passageways throughout. Once slated for demolition, the ornate six-bedroom house was rebuilt and turned into an Inn in 2004. Aside from sleeping accommodations, the house has two dining options, Luce and Hawkins, a formal sit-down dining experience, and Luce's Landing, for an impromptu bite to eat.

A Home Away From Home

If you are looking for a place to call home while on vacation, there are several cottages available for rent, including J&S Reeve Cottages, nestled on Reeve's Beach and the Peconic Bay and between farms in Aquebogue. J&S has one-, two-, and three-bedroom, newly-renovated cottages, all with access to dock slips.

The Bayview Inn and Restaurant in Riverhead, which is a seven-room Inn and restaurant also has two guest cottages: one two-bedroom, the other a single bedroom. And in Southold there are the Historic White Blossom House Cottages and Apartments, which are just minutes from the beach.
