Greenport Holiday Getaway

Greenport Holiday Getaway

Published on Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Now in its second year, the annual Greenport Holiday Festival began when a group of Greenport businesses got together to bring to the village an extended season of activity centered around its historic maritime past as well as introduce the town’s lovely diverse present. Working as a sub-group of the Greenport Business Association, the holiday committee members – Leueen Millerd, Nancy Curtin, Kathleen Bifulco and Caroline Waloski – along with several volunteers, thought the festival would be a great way to build tourism and help promote Greenport as the year-round community that it is.

Sometimes you stop paying attention. Sometimes you can live somewhere forever and forget to look around. Sometimes you just have to take a break and enjoy your neighborhood. That's what I did recently. And it all started with a nude drawing class I took in the spring as part of my commitment to try new things each week for my blog, www.the52weeks.com.

East Hampton

East Hampton

East Hampton is a top contender in the global real estate market for several reasons, one being its close proximity to New York City and the ease of getting back and forth by Hampton Jitney, limousine, or helicopter. There is even the option of taking an amphibious seaplane, via Aquatica Aviation, directly from East Hampton to the East River in only 45 minutes! Another reason is the sheer beauty of East Hampton's landscape, with its nearby ocean beaches and surrounding farmlands, where visitors are reminded that there really is a kinder, gentler life. National Geographic named East Hampton "America's Most Beautiful Village," in part because of its charming Norman Rockwell-like backdrop: centuries-old buildings line the streets, one after the other, and the beautiful town pond has the ever-present swans during the warm days while winter evenings there provide a romantic setting as ice skaters gracefully spin and twirl under the soft glow of the streetlights.

Montauk

Montauk

Located on the easternmost tip of Long Island, Montauk is a small town with a long history. Andy Warhol owned a home here, and guests included Jackie Kennedy Onassis, her sister Lee Radziwill, and the Rolling Stones, who wrote a song about a motel in town (on their Black and Blue album) called Memory Motel. Montaukers have seen fashion shoots and celebrity weddings, and the town's scenic backdrop has served as a setting for movies, including the Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet flick, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Captain Kidd supposedly buried his treasure here, the Montaukett Indians were among the first to inhabit this part of the Island some 4,000 years ago, and then there is the famous (or perhaps infamous) Montauk Monster, a weird, still-unidentified animal that washed ashore in 2008.

Westhampton

Westhampton

Westhampton, also known to many as “The First Hampton”, has a reputation of being a more family-friendly locale when compared to that of its South Fork counterparts. The overall vibe in Westhampton is a bit more laid-back and relaxed then the rest of the area. That is not to say there are not many businesses and restaurants that cater to an upscale and also single crowd. That, perhaps, is the beauty of Westhampton; that it continues to be a destination for both families as well as people looking for fabulous dining and a fun night life.

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays is a community which takes pride and is rich in its fishing heritage.  Its proximity allows easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, making the hamlet the second busiest commercial fishing port in the state next to Montauk.  The school mascot is appropriately the Baymen paying homage to the culture.  Also, thanks to this ideal location one can experience a number of great beaches and water view dining spots.  The downtown is small by “Hamptons” standards helping to create an overall cozy, comfortable feel.
