It's that time of year again. Temperatures and dropping and the kids are back in school. We're trading in long beach weekends for fashion week, cashmere sweaters and dining out three nights a week. If you're like me, and playing catch-up on what happened in the culinary world over the last few months, you've got a lot of work cut out for you. Now, more than ever before, celebrity chefs and new restaurant openings are in the headlines daily — making it nearly impossible to keep up. If you're looking for a way to get back "in-the-know" while enjoying great food and drinks and supporting a good cause, here are a few recommendations for you!

Dominican Sisters Family Health Service

Dominican Sisters Family Health Service

When Mary Walsh began her personal crusade against sickness among the poor of New York City in the late 1800s, she never could have envisioned that her work would be carried on for so many years by the caring hands of the Dominican Sisters Family Health Service. Officially recognized as its own order of nuns by the Catholic Church in 1910, the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor have been helping people in need for over 100 years. In 1961, they began doing their good works in Hampton Bays, and the organization has grown by leaps and bounds ever since. In September, they will hold a 50th anniversary gala event to celebrate their work and to raise funds to continue financing their operations.

Polo for All

By now, many people are familiar with Ignacio 'Nacho' Figueras, the handsome Ralph Lauren model who appears on billboards and glossy magazines, and who also serves as an ambassador for the sport of polo. Move over Nacho, because the Polo Girls have hit the scene, creating ripples in the polo industry and making an impact by growing the sport of polo, particularly among women.

Fourth of July 2011

Fourth of July 2011

This year's Fourth of July holiday weekend is a three-dayer, just as Memorial Day was (for those of you who need to get a jump on it, July 1 is a Friday). The Fourth falls on the Monday, so the Federal Holiday and the actual date match up this year. Among other notable anniversaries, this year also marks the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty — okay...it was dedicated on October 28, 1886, but it was restored for her centennial, which was celebrated on July 4, 1986; ergo, 125th. If you haven't been, go. Check www.nps.gov/stli/planyourvisit and throw in a visit to Ellis Island as well. It's also the 235th birthday of the good ol' US of A, which is — ostensibly — what all the Fourth of July hoopla is to be about.

A Perfect Romance

A Perfect Romance

Darrell Hammond has become a comic legend thanks to his 14 years at Saturday Night Live. He holds the SNL record as the longest running cast member, and he has impersonated the most people, including John McCain, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Regis Philbin, and Donald Trump. Since leaving Saturday Night Live in 2009, Hammond is expanding his horizons. While his stand-up comedy is still an instrumental part of his career, he has gone on to do Broadway, television (both comedy and drama), and is returning for another summer at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor to be a part of both their Comedy Club series, as well as star in their Mainstage production of Romance by David Mamet.

Golfing Long Island

Golfing Long Island's Most Exclusive Clubs

Just last year I played Atlantic Golf Club, Gardiner’s Bay Country Club, and Noyac Golf Club. Both this year and last year I had to pass on a chance to play Sebonack (I couldn’t quite swing the price tag on that one), and I’ve played the Maidstone Club on multiple occasions. Who am I that I get to play Long Island’s premier courses on a yearly basis? The short answer…nobody special.
