Locals usually breath a sigh of relief on December 26 as the last Christmas tree heads west atop a car. The period of quiet, when the North Fork returns to the “good old days,” however, lasts just barely through January and then it’s back to business for connoisseurs of the North Fork’s nightlife and weekend party potential.

While lots of New Yorkers scramble south to the warm-weather states when
the first rush of cold air blows in, the die-hards stay here year-round
and tough it out during the winter. To be honest though, the winters
here are usually so mild that it really doesn't much matter if we go or
if we stay. I will admit that this year is the exception. (Ironically,
as I write this, I am stranded in an airport hotel in the Midwest,
unable to get a flight home due to New York's unusually bad weather!)
Regardless of the amount of snowfall we get, that old adage holds true:
when life hands you lemons (or in this case, cold weather), take those
lemons and make lemonade. That being said, let me introduce you to the
2011 Long Island Winterfest.

In the heart of downtown Riverhead stands a group of historic buildings
dedicated to the health of the fine arts on Long Islands East End. On
any given day, a passer-by might be treated to the sight of sculpture
decorating the grounds, the sound of the grand piano wafting out of the
windows, a children's theater class rehearsing on the lawn, or a
painting class enjoying the weather. No matter the time, the day, or the
season, something creative and exciting is happening at the East End
Arts Council, and everyone is welcome to come inside the gates and
explore their creativity.
