A Beginner's Guide to Fishing

A word to the wise: the piscatorial pursuit known as fishing is called fishing and not catching for a reason. If you always keep in mind that you're going fishing and not catching, you'll have a far better and entirely more enjoyable time chasing finned critters around the briny. That being said, here are some things you'll need to know if you're just starting out.

You'll always come across nifty little items that you simply must have. Oh, you probably have no use for them, but you have to have them. Well unlike that dust-gathering book embosser, that brass gimbaled globe of the earth made from shell, or the shale imprint of a trilobite you picked up who knows where, the items I've picked below are — by and large — gadgets and gizmos that actually serve a purpose. They're also really neat.

It happens on the first Monday of November every year, and every year it catches me and my partner Capt. Ed with too little time to get ready. To be sure, we always make it out to the scallop grounds - wherever the little critters may be - but that last week of October is always a rush of dredges to mend, boat "stuff" to fix or change, and crews to obtain.

Montauk

Montauk

Located on the easternmost tip of Long Island, Montauk is a small town with a long history. Andy Warhol owned a home here, and guests included Jackie Kennedy Onassis, her sister Lee Radziwill, and the Rolling Stones, who wrote a song about a motel in town (on their Black and Blue album) called Memory Motel. Montaukers have seen fashion shoots and celebrity weddings, and the town's scenic backdrop has served as a setting for movies, including the Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet flick, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Captain Kidd supposedly buried his treasure here, the Montaukett Indians were among the first to inhabit this part of the Island some 4,000 years ago, and then there is the famous (or perhaps infamous) Montauk Monster, a weird, still-unidentified animal that washed ashore in 2008.

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays is a community which takes pride and is rich in its fishing heritage.  Its proximity allows easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, making the hamlet the second busiest commercial fishing port in the state next to Montauk.  The school mascot is appropriately the Baymen paying homage to the culture.  Also, thanks to this ideal location one can experience a number of great beaches and water view dining spots.  The downtown is small by “Hamptons” standards helping to create an overall cozy, comfortable feel.
