Summer is finally starting to heat up, and it’s the perfect time to get outside and have some fun. With energy to burn and two months left of summer vacation, the kids need something fun to do. If you've already been to the beach three times this week – or just don't feel like lugging the chairs and umbrella – it's time to try something different.
The Adventure Park in Wheatley Heights is a fun and exciting alternative to the standard summer beach day. This outdoor adventure in the trees features zip lines and rope bridges and is for ages 7 and up, open from June to early September. The park is open 7 days a week, opening at 10am Monday-Friday, and 8am Saturday & Sunday. This park isn't just for the kids either! Adults can enjoy more strenuous courses for an innovative, “feel-good” workout.
Each person participating must sign a waiver before heading out on the courses (anyone under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent/guardian) – waivers are available online and must be completed prior to your visit to the park. Don't let the waiver scare you, safety orientations are given before the climb, safety harnesses are provided, and park guides are available to offer any help you may need.
At the Adventure Park there are 5 different trails to choose from, all color-coded based on difficulty. Water coolers are stationed throughout the park, but not at each course so it is a good idea to bring your own bottle as well. Lockers can be rented for $3 for your personal belongings and you will need your driver's license to obtain a locker key. Tickets to the park are good for 3 hours of climb time with prices ranging from $39 for kids 7-9, to $54 for ages 12 and over.
Don't miss out on a day full of climbing and enjoying the best zip lining that Long Island has to offer at the Adventure Park!
Good to know: If you're afraid of heights but want to give it a try there are 'beginner' courses that are less strenuous, and lower to the ground.
The Adventure Park is located at 75 Colonial Spring Rd., Wheatley Heights. For more information about the park, including park rules visit longislandadventurepark.org.
