The EZ-Robot platform was built with the goal of making robotics technology available to the masses. By componentizing both the hardware and software portions of the robot, you can easily build, modify, change, then rebuild as many different variations of robot as you can imagine. Once it's built, you can customize the functionality and personality of your robot to your heart's content.
Hardware features like arms, grippers, scorpion appendages, humanoid bodies, treads, humanoid feet, sensors, cameras - and so many other options you'll have to see for yourself - allow for complete customization from the beginning, or you can buy a complete kit to start with as a base and take it from there. Full kits range from $249 to $469.
On the software side, if you're not a software engineer, feel free to just play with the built-in options. If you are a software engineer (or are at least pretty technically proficient to hack your way around with some examples and tutorials to work with), you can use the EZ-Script scripting language or download the EZ-SDK to write your own Visual Basic, C#, or C++ code.
And if somehow you're not sold yet, this should do it:
