The Hamptons Institute Kicks Off at Guild Hall

Guild Hall in collaboration with The Roosevelt Institute present The Hamptons Institute "Spring Awakening" on Saturday, April 16. The Ideas Festival features former Obama administration budget director, Peter Orszag, in a conversation on the nation's fiscal and economic future with Steve Kroft, CBS' 60 Minutes correspondent at 11am. Then at 2pm, Paul Farmer, the renowned Harvard physician and social anthropologist, who is now the United Nations Deputy Special Envoy in Haiti, will address global challenges in health and human rights.

"We are proud to present these discussions and provide this unique opportunity to hear and engage in a cross-pollination of ideas," said Mickey Straus, Chair, Guild Hall Board of Trustees. "Our goal is to present a spectrum of perspectives concerning today's most pressing challenges and foster new ideas and potential solutions."

"We are pleased to partner with Guild Hall in cultivating a wide ranging discussion of some of the most important subjects of the day," said Andrew Rich, President and CEO, Roosevelt Institute. "The Hamptons Institute is about bringing key leaders to the Hamptons for discussion of crucially important ideas."

This summer the Hamptons Institute will also host a 3-day symposium from July 15 through July 17. The program consists of four sessions, interspersed with informal dinners and lunches for participants and sponsors. Confirmed speakers include Robert Caro and Jonathan Alter who will provide their perspectives on the Obama presidency. Among the invited speakers are: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Mayor Mike Bloomberg (NYC), Mayor Cory Booker (Newark), National Endowment for the Arts Chair Rocco Landesman, George Stephanopoulos and Ray Mabus, United States Secretary of the Navy.

Conversations will feature prominent commentators and thought leaders on a range of topical issues including developments in the Middle East, national security, and public investment in the arts, among others. The weekend will also host the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center lecture on "Lee Krasner in East Hampton" with Gail Levin.

Inaugurated in 2010, the Hamptons Institute is dedicated to presenting a range of intellectual and professional perspectives on the most challenging issues confronting our country and the world. Its aim is to engage in thoughtful debate and deliberation on concerns to which we may bring differing points of view and around subjects that range from economics and business to politics and public policy, and from arts and culture, to the role of the media.

Last summer the Hamptons Institute featured distinguished panelists and speakers from across the arts, the economy and the media including George Soros, Elizabeth Warren, Bernard Schwartz, Margo Lion, Damian Woetzel, Ken Auletta, Jeff Zucker, Eric Fischl, Joe Nocera, Jeff Madrick, Lisa Dennison, and Craig Newmark discussing critical issues. Panel topics included "Restoring the Integrity of the U.S. Financial Markets," "Building the Infrastructure for a New Economy," "Investing in Arts and Culture," and "The Future of News and Media." The conversations were covered by Reuters and Bloomberg, among other major news outlets.
