Winter Fun on the North Fork

By Gary P. Joyce
Published on 12/26/2011

All of us have busy lives, but why is it when winter arrives, we'd rather sit in front of the boob tube (there's a cultural anomaly! There are no tubes in our television sets anymore, so there goes the "tube," and since the new gen of TVs are all connectable to computers, there's a case to be made for losing the "boob" as well. But I digress)? Where was I? Oh yeah, sitting around growing blubber all winter. Well, rather than continuing that trend, herewith are some suggestions for mostly outdoor activities – emphasis on activity! – that are worth rising off the recliner or couch, getting dressed appropriately, and heading out into that cold, clean, fresh winter air.

Now That’s What I Call a Holiday Gift!

By Roman Roth
Published on 12/19/2011

It is the time of year again where giving and receiving gifts occupies all of us way too much. It is such a challenge every year and can create unneeded stress; taking the fun out of the holidays. While lines are growing in the glamorous big city shops and you strain your brain to come up with clever and wonderful presents, there is a much more special and, most importantly, a meaningful gift solution for your significant other or friends and family.

Giving

'Tis the season to be racking our brains and wandering store aisles hoping for gift giving inspiration to strike. Looking for gifts for my nearest and dearest is easy for me. On the other hand, coming up with a little something to let the other people we interact with throughout the year know that we appreciate them makes me wish for a crystal ball to dust off. Another scarf? Another tchotchke? I say make the present consumable! No need to make the drive "up island" or fight city crowds to frantically scan the megastores. The thought actually makes me dizzy. But fear not – great ideas that say "I thought about this" are right under our noses and can be procured in a snap.

The East End Arts Council

By Cathy Meinhold
Published on 1/24/2011

In the heart of downtown Riverhead stands a group of historic buildings dedicated to the health of the fine arts on Long Islands East End. On any given day, a passer-by might be treated to the sight of sculpture decorating the grounds, the sound of the grand piano wafting out of the windows, a children's theater class rehearsing on the lawn, or a painting class enjoying the weather. No matter the time, the day, or the season, something creative and exciting is happening at the East End Arts Council, and everyone is welcome to come inside the gates and explore their creativity.
