In the off-season, Southampton is a sleepy town with a laid-back vibe. During the whirlwind summertime social season, however, this charming village plays host to jet-setters from around the world. Home to the likes of Calvin Klein and many other A-listers, here is where gated mansions, high-end fashion, and celebrity-heavy events spring to life once the season kicks in. Visitors and locals alike love to shop, dine, and hit the beaches, so we’ve put together a list of fun activities to help you and your family enjoy the summer.

A Star on the Rise

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Now playing at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall is the award winning play Equus starring Alec Baldwin and Sam Underwood. If you are not familiar with the production, the premise revolves around psychiatrist Martin Dysart (played by Baldwin) and his treatment of a 17-year-old boy, Alan Strang (Underwood). The young man commits a most gruesome and unusual crime and it is left to Dr. Dysart to get to the bottom of what drove him to it. It is most definitely a thought-provoking piece which includes themes of religion, passion, societal norms and expectation, and sexuality. The story and themes are compelling and the acting is truly magnificent. It is undoubtedly a worthwhile way to spend an evening in the Hamptons.

A Perfect Romance

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Darrell Hammond has become a comic legend thanks to his 14 years at Saturday Night Live. He holds the SNL record as the longest running cast member, and he has impersonated the most people, including John McCain, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Regis Philbin, and Donald Trump. Since leaving Saturday Night Live in 2009, Hammond is expanding his horizons. While his stand-up comedy is still an instrumental part of his career, he has gone on to do Broadway, television (both comedy and drama), and is returning for another summer at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor to be a part of both their Comedy Club series, as well as star in their Mainstage production of Romance by David Mamet.

The East End's Best Surf Spots

By Brett Mauser
Published on 8/24/2010

Longtime East End surfer (and NextStop contributor) Gary Joyce calls it Long Island's version of Hawaii, and it's considered one of the east coast's premier surfing spots along with Cape Hatteras, N.C. Elite surfers in the area and from all over come out to Ditch. What makes it so special? Unlike most other south shore beaches with sand bottoms, Ditch's rock bottom create these nice, long peeling waves. It gets crowded fast during peak season, and it's no place for beginners – unless they want to see the best put on a show.

Gimme Shelter

On Location: Shelter Island

By Diane Roncone
Published on 8/21/2010

I was in an accident last summer that left me in a wheelchair for nearly three months. Once I was up and on my feet, I was determined to get active again. I had heard about a 10-mile hike taking place on Shelter Island at the Mashomack Preserve. Hiking had always been one of my favorite pastimes because it clears my mind and the nature aspect of it keeps me grounded. I knew that the Preserve had over 2,000 acres with miles of sandy coastline, and figured that this was a great way to break out of my wheelchair state of mind. Before I lost my nerve, I signed up. And I went.

So You Wanna' Be A Surfer

By Gary P. Joyce
Published on 8/19/2010

It's really never too late to start surfing — well, maybe there does come a time when it is — but, as long as you can move, there's absolutely no reason why you can't give it a shot. As sports go, it's as healthy as they get; you don't need a team (though, in the beginning a buddy is a good idea); the equipment outlay is steep to start, but care will keep it for a long time; and you get to pick the playing field (that's to say, the size of wave you want to surf). Finally, add all that to the fact that Long Island — from Montauk to the Rockaways — has some of the best surfing on the East Coast and, well, maybe the better question is why don't you want to learn to surf? Here are some things you'll need to know to get you on your way.

Pinot Blanc

A Ninja Mutant Grape!

By Roman Roth
Published on 8/17/2010

"Pinot Blanc is a white wine grape. It is a point genetic mutation of Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is genetically unstable and will occasionally experience a point mutation in which a vine bears all black fruit except for one cane which produced white fruit." - Excerpt from Wikipedia

So there you have it. For all the people who don't like Pinot Noir this is proof that even the grapes themselves don't want to be a Pinot Noir and rebel by mutating.

"A mutant is an individual, organism, or new genetic character, arising or resulting from an instance of mutation, which is a base-pair sequence change within the DNA of a gene or chromosome of an organism resulting in the creation of a new character or trait not found in the wild type." - Wikipedia

The good news is that thanks to this "mutation" we have the pleasure of being able to enjoy this wonderful wine.
